Co-op students earn high school credits, but do not get paid. Some employers may choose to provide a modest honorarium or assist students with work related expenses i.e.: transportation, uniform, however, this is not common and is not expected.
Cooperative Education
Cooperative Education (Co-op) is an experiential learning opportunity for students in Grades 11 and 12 to try out a job and see how it fits!
All Ontario Co-operative Education programs have specific requirements. Students will need to plan ahead in order to ensure that there is room to accommodate Co-op in their timetable. For more information, make an appointment to speak with a Guidance Counsellor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is responsible for insurance?
A Work Education Agreement form is completed and signed by all parties prior to student placement. Through this agreement, students are covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
How long do co-op placements last?
In most cases, co-op placements will take place during either the morning, the afternoon or the full school day, and extend over one semester (5 months). Co-op placements can sometimes be longer in duration depending on the employer鈥檚 and student鈥檚 needs and interests.
What are the responsibilities of employers?
Employers are expected to provide a safe working environment and realistic view of workplace expectations, while supporting learning and growth. This typically includes:
- A practice interview with the student and feedback for improvement
- Training in health and safety rules specific to the workplace and orientation sessions
- Supervision, guidance and assessment of student鈥檚 work performance to ensure employer satisfaction and continuous student learning
